Well it is the last newsletter of 2015 - where has that gone? When I started to look back on the golfing year, it really was a good year. Jordan Spieth started at The Masters and didn't seem to finish, Rory had a kick about that ruined his season and Jason Day hit a streak of form that was unbelievable for a few week around the USPGA. With Ricky Fowler, Justin Rose, Bubba Watson and Henrik Stenson all at the top of their game too I think that 2016 will continue to be great year for golf.
Some 2015 PGA Tour Stats
In 2015 Twenty-four players averaged at least 300 yards per drive this season. In 2000, John Daly was the only player to average 300 yards plus. The longest driving average in an event was 362.1 yards by Bubba Watson at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Bubba hit 49 drives of 300-plus at the event. Bernd Wiesberger had the longest drive of the season at 426 yards, which would be good enough to drive our 3rd hole from the white tees! At the business end of the course Daniel Summerhays led the TOUR in putting from 3 feet and in, incredibly, he didn't miss a putt in 941 attempts. A total of seven players were perfect from 3 feet and In, including Jason Day (612 of 612), who is the only player not to miss a putt inside 3 feet in the past two seasons. (986 of 986), and Freddie Jacobson had the longest streak without a three-putt at 542 holes!! There over 10,000 twos on the PGA Tour and not one of them had entered the twos sweep!
Highlights at Moortown were obviously the Ladies total domination in the all the teams. The scratch team winning the L&DUGC team championship, Phil Tomkinson being chased for the Yorkshire Order of Merit by Ben Firth all the way to the final event and for me personally seeing so many of my pupils doing so well and reducing their handicaps.
The early call to cancel the shot-gun last Saturday was totally right as it didn't stop raining all day. Four people did venture out on Saturday, I'm not sure if they deserve a certificate or certifying!! The course was closed on Sunday due to large areas of standing water freezing over, and more rain during the week has left the course really wet. The green committee would ask anyone who can carry to please do so for the next few weeks, it really does make a huge difference as the traffic is dissipated much more especially around the greens. On Saturday we have a Texas Scramble with a very large field down to play, so to speed up play to enable everybody to get round the competition will be played over 14 holes - holes 2&3 and 13&14 will be out of play, not only should it get everybody around a bit quicker it will allow you to have one more festive drink before having to do those Christmas chores!
The Ladies Section performed a couple of Pantomimes over the last couple of weeks. It was written by Jane Slinger and starred future and previous Lady Captains, with guest appearances from Geoff Mortimer and yours truly as Prince Charming. It was good fun and star of the show was definitely Margaret Calvert who was more Queen than The Queen herself!!
