The Sydney Groves Qualifier

The Sydney Groves qualifier on Saturday produced the best score I have seen in my 13 years at Moortown. 

Gordon Martin paired up with Antony Burrows who is becoming a bit of a Sydney Groves qualifying specialist having won in 2013 and 2nd in 2009, scorched round in nett 67, eclipsing the previous best score of 68 by Richard Cooper and Jonathan Greenwood in 2010. 

Gordon was quick to come in and tell me that the winter coaching finally all clicked into place, whilst Antony had had an emergency lesson on Friday. Second place with 68 which would normally comfortably win were two more winter coaching disciples, Jack Cooke with me and Tom Limbert with Eddie. 

It didn't stop there either in third place was John Fearn and Stephen Cirell, Stephen has been on the winter coaching with Eddie and was out on Friday for a playing lesson honing his Aimpoint skills that he learnt at the Aimpoint day last month. All great adverts that coaching pays off and I know how much you all love to hear about it!

The Masters

Well what a Sunday night at Augusta - with 10 holes to go I have to admit I thought it was a bit boring, I did say to my brother Spieth needs to bogey 10 and 11 and then find the water somewhere. I hadn't realised that I was a prophet! 

But after the near total collapse of Jordan Spieth, Danny Willett stood up to the plate with a great tee shot on the 16th, fantastic chip on the 17th and then he and his caddy Jonathan Smart showed how important a team and a process are, when there was a bit of heckling on the tee Danny stood off his tee shot twice and then they regrouped and started the whole process again. It was fantastic for golf, but hopefully will be particularly good for Yorkshire golf.

It is interesting that both Danny and Lydia Ko are using the standard head XR16 driver and not the Pro head version. The XR16 has proved really successful in the studio this year, so if you would like to have a try with this year's major driver book a driver fitting now. Radio Leeds was quick off the mark following Danny's win and Lady Captain Didi Powers had a slot on Tuesday night and another scheduled for Wednesday night, talking about the success of Moortown ladies and the success of our academy programme. I'll just leave you with this one - probably aren't too many clubs in England with both English Masters Champions on their honours board.
