The June Medal Was A Barn Burner
There was some fantastic scoring in the June Medal, last Saturday. Andy Jones produced the best round of the year at Moortown scoring a gross 67 - 4 under par. The only blemish on Andy's card was a 5 on the 5th, and having navigated the front nine in level par, a four under par back nine of 31 with birdies on 11th, 15th, 17th and 18th sealed the fine score. Unfortunately for Andy the nett 68, off plus one, wasn't good enough to win the medal with Philip Murtagh producing another fantastic round.
Having accomplished the life long dream of single figures in the Greenwood Shield, Philip has continued to perform, playing to his handicap in the next medal and on Saturday produced the best round of his life - a gross 76, nett 67, which saw his handicap drop even further to 7.6, then a little exceptional score reduction of 0.5 sees Philip down to 7.1.
When Philip joined in January 2014 he was 17 handicap, lessons in early 2014 saw a reduction to 12 handicap by May 2014. Winter Coaching 2014/2015 saw a further reduction to 10 handicap, and Philip continued with more coaching this last winter and now has reduced to 7 handicap. An absolutely fantastic achievement, 10 shots in just over two years, one of the best improvements I have seen in my time as a Professional.
Matthew East also deserves a mention, his one under par gross 70, nett 68, would normally win any medal at Moortown but was only good enough for third this week.
Division Two was won by Bill Mutch with a nett 71. Bill, with his new Ping woods and irons, has obviously found a new lease of life having reached 70 this year, playing the last 7 holes in 3 over par - not bad off 19 handicap. That was good enough to beat Fred Davies and Jamie Chappell on the back nine.
Crosby Beacon
On Sunday the Vice Captain took the team of David Houlding, Andy Jones, Matthew East and myself to West Lancs for The Crosby Beacon Trophy. The team finished third on one over par, one shot behind Formby and five shots behind Royal Liverpool. It was a real delight to see David produce an under par score despite not playing well, Andy and Matthew both continued their good form from Saturday, unfortunately for me the flat stick just didn't know how to perform and it has now been relegated to the garage again to teach it a lesson it obviously didn't learn last time!
