Moortown's Got Talent
Well I'm not sure who were the biggest winners of the weekend - Stephen Cirell and Gordon Martin on Saturday or Brian and Rachel Robinson on Friday in Moortown's Got Talent!
I'll start in chronological order to show no bias!
The clubhouse was packed to see the 10 acts that had thrown their hats into the ring. The Ladies got the show on the road with their Eastern Promise dancing then Past Captain and President Brian Robinson certainly set a good marker in the sand with a Frank Sinatra number.
Shona Emmet, Jane Slinger and Maire McCarthy were next up as the three birdies, Ken Myers and Henry Etherington closed the first half of the show - cutting remarks from Simon "Captain" Cowell and Joe "Louis" Hendron, praise and glamour from The Lady Captain and past Lady Captain Sue.
Stuart and his team joined in the theme with usherette outfits - think I know where they might be going in the New Year!!
Graham Etherington got the 2nd half under way with a solo on his bass, and then it was youngest performer of the night Jack Ellis aged 9 with some free style dancing. Then the treasurer astounded the audience with his recital of the atomic table - yes-atomic table!
Then it was GABBA - Bev Burrows, Angie Gault, Neil Stoddard and yours truly (though most didn't recognise me with hair!!) - surely the best performance of the night.
But no the final ace was Brian Robinson again with his daughter (Academy Member) and Rachel - who really can sing.
Brian and Rachel stole the show and the great trophy GABBA feeling hard done by!
A great night well done Dave Ellis and Geoff Mortimer - watch out Ant & Dec, Didi - great idea and thank you to everyone else involved it was a great night. Down to the golf on Saturday and it was one of Eddie's pupil Stephen Cirell who finally showed what Eddie has been telling me was going to happen.
Stephen paired up with Gordon Martin and was on fire - they had 23 points on the front nine - Stephen had 22!! Gordon did manage to get on the card a bit more on the back nine with four 4's - 23 points again on the back nine and 46 points wasn't going to be beaten.
Gordon did tell me that Stephen had a few fist pumps going on - watch out Tiger!
A 67 gross by Dave Nugent and Peter Thompson just wasn't good enough finishing with 45 points and rueing that neither could make a three on the 17th hole.
Still time to grab a bargain with our 25% Off
Sale in the shop on Peter Millar and Oscar Jacobson, Skycaddie GPS watches and Aires have been popular and we had a new deliver this week.
I predicted that 2016 would be a great year for golf - and I certainly wasn't wrong.
The highlight personally was grabbing a picture with my lifelong hero Jack Nicklaus.
We lost The King - Arnold, and had possibly witnessed the greatest battle ever at The Open at Troon.
At Moortown it wasn't such a great year in the number of trophies won, Tom Gray won the Yorkshire Boys, but the course was the star of the show.
The work done by John Wilson as Greens Chairman a few years ago, the stewardship of Steve Robinson and his team and some good weather meant the course was the best I'd seen it since I've been at Moortown.
We didn't go up in The Golf Monthly ranking this year, but I'm sure next year we will. Looking at the map in Golf Monthly of the top 100 courses, highlights we are in the top 20 inland courses in the country.
Thanks for all your support over the past year; I continue to feel privileged to work at what I believe is the best club in the country.
Happy Christmas and have a great New Year.
