Club news

Chef Darren settling in well

It has been a fairly quite week at Moortown. There was no competition at the weekend and unlike the competition days there were plenty of gaps on the start sheet. The light covering of snow had mainly gone but with some of the green being frozen below and soft on top meant the unusual sight at Moortown of a few temporary greens.

Darren seems to be settling into his new position of chef alongside his sidekick Craig - getting use to the kitchen, ovens and the quirks that are every golf club. If there is a particular need or requirement just have a chat with Darren or Craig and I am sure they will oblige.

Competition news

Pinehurst Greensomes

It's competition time again this weekend with a Pinehurst Greensomes - just for clarity this is played in pairs, you both drive and then play each other's drive and choose the best ball after the second shot.

Again with a full field we will be playing a shortened course with holes 2 and 3 out of play.

Winter order of Merit

The Winter Order of Merit is looking close with Mike Winterbottom top of Division Two and Simon Stephens and David Marriott top of Division One.

Shop news

January Sale

We have continued to have a huge success with our January Sale and as a final push we have made some even bigger reductions.

All the trousers on the sale rail are now only £20 a pair and the Autumn Winter Peter Millar is now 80% Off - yes 80% Off!

We still have a few pairs of half price shoes and some bargain shirts for only £5 but hurray just over a week left.

Pros news

John Jacobs

It was with great sadness that one of Yorkshire's finest golf professionals passed away this week.

John Jacobs fondly known as Doctor Golf died at age 91. John filmed a series "Play Better Golf" at Moortown in which Moortown Life Member Jean Burrows featured. I am sure that Burt Budin was instrumental in arranging the program along with Bryon. There have been many tributes but probably none better than by close friend Peter Alliss, it's worth a watch. Click here to view.

My lasting memory of John Jacobs will be the centenary Pro-Am at Moortown when John did a superb Q&A with Dougie Donolley, Neil Coles and Jack Newton.

When asked what his greatest achievement was in golf Jacobs quick as a flash replied "beating Gary Player in the South African Matchplay in 1957 2&1"

Not much will be mentioned about that victory, more what he did for the professional game, the founding of the European Tour and the part he played in making The Ryder Cup what it is today.

Golf will for ever be in his debt.
