Competition news

J Arthur Sykes

A ten minute thunder storm caused some havoc to some of the competitors in the J Arthur Sykes on Saturday, but not for David Aitken who won by two shots having scored a fine 75 gross nett 70. Steve Boldy took advantage of an early tee time and scored a nett 72, and Richard Warwick continued his steady progress after his winter coaching also scoring a nett 72. That's 3 rounds out of 5 under CSS for Richard this year, well done.

The confusion on Saturday arose I believe from people being unaware of the procedure during an electrical storm. Under the rules of golf the player must not discontinue play unless:

(i) the Committee has suspended play;
(ii) he believes there is danger from lightning;
(iii) he is seeking a decision from the Committee on a doubtful or disputed point (see Rules 2-5 and 34-3); or
(iv) there is some other good reason such as sudden illness. Bad weather is not of itself a good reason for discontinuing play.

In the shop I was continually checking the weather radar and saw that the thunder storm was to pass quickly and left the decision in the hands of the player. Adding to the confusion was the siren from Sand Moor going off a varying number of times; on ring the pro shop at Sand Moor they said they "just gave a few blasts to make sure everyone heard it."

Club Match vs Fulford

The club match away at Fulford on Sunday ended in an honourable half. I was unable to play and was caught up in the BA fiasco trying to get to Wentworth and back for the PGA Championship. We did get there and managed to see Alex Noren's fantastic eagle on the last which not only sealed him victory but also meant I had a nice little winner at 20-1, so it wasn't too bad a day in the end!

Ladies J Arthur Sykes

It was The Lady Vice-Captain who lead the qualifiers for the Ladies J Arthur Sykes on Tuesday edging out the inform Anne Weston on a count back having both scored nett 75's.
