It was a quite weekend with no competition following on from the greens week. The scheduled match versus Ganton was washed out on Sunday and we had a morning of snooker followed by Sunday lunch - the game has been rescheduled for October.
The weather enabled the greens to be over seeded and double dressed last week, with over 50 tons of sand being put on the greens! The bent seed used is so fine it looks a little bit like dust - it doesn't come cheap either - costing over £300 per bag and over 3 bags used on the 19 greens. Hopefully the investment keeps the greens improving and again we will be the envy of the county over the winter with the best greens for miles around.
It is Junior Masters on Monday and we really could do with some volunteers to escort each group around. With a good field I think we need another 6 or 7 volunteers so if you can spare a few hours on Monday it would be greatly appreciated. You never know you could be looking after the new Lee Westwood who finished second many years ago, or the new Matthew Fitzpatrick who also finished second in 2008.
The USPGA was amazing - I was convinced that Rory had blown it, but the back nine performance just proved what a great player he has become. I'm not going to recommend ditching your partners but he certainly seems to have refocused his attentions since finishing with Miss Wozinacki! If there was every proof that hitting the ball long and straight makes it easier, Rory proved it hitting over 72% of fairways and averaging 320 yards. Remember most of those 320 yards are in the air, with the fairways being so wet. That gives him a wedge into the first at Moortown - carries the ditch on the second, dread to think how far down the 12th, carries the ditch on 16th and gets past the fourth bunker on the 18th. The best golfers of generations have been great drivers, Hogan, Nicklaus, Norman, Woods - get the ball in play and it certainly becomes easier.
The ladies played the Mollie Thompson Trophy on Tuesday, which was won by Liz Boldy. Following the competition the ladies had a celebration for Margaret Calvert's 90th birthday. In her thank you speech Margaret said "she enjoyed her time at Moortown" - that's what must have kept her a member for 74 years!! I'd love to know if anybody anywhere had been a member for longer.
