What a week for Moortown Golf Club. On Monday 1st September Moortown Ladies 'A' team became the Yorkshire Interclub Champions. In a really hard fought match in the morning semi-finals they beat Doncaster Golf Club by 4 games to 3. In the afternoon final they had a resounding 5 games to 2 victory against West Bradford. Congratulations to the ladies team, their Team Captain Bev Burrows and all the ladies who represented Moortown on the day - Lady Captain - Glenys Smart, Dianne Thompson, Beryl Pickering, Vicky Renny, Sam Waters and Christine Mannion. Another amazing achievement for our Ladies Section.
Also on Monday Moortown's star nonagenarian Roger Calvert won the over 90's prize in The Lawrence Batley Over 80's at Moortown with a great score of 34 points.
Then on Tuesday the Moortown MacKenzie team came second in the 25th Annual MacKenzie Society at Lahinch in Ireland. The team of Richard Brown (MacKenzie Director), Malcolm Slinger, Karandeep Sohel, Bob Hartley, Paul Shires, Pete Owens, Simon Stephens and myself scored 290 points for the 8 rounds. We beat the local team from Lahinch into 3rd place beating them by 3 points. But we could not touch the team from Titirangi, whose handicapping system does seem to be different to the rest of the world as they scored an unbelievable 302 points. There as ever were many highlights to the trip and first timers on the MacKenzie were all blown away by the event. I must thank my partner for the week Simon Stephens - we were one of only a handful of pairs to complete the practise round on the Sunday in what were some of the most horrendous conditions I have played golf. Simon produced one of the most amazing 9 holes of golf I have seen during that round when he was 3 under par for 9 holes, when survival was the name of the game. The form continued and we totally "Ham and Hegged" it in the competition with 12 birdies between us and not only did we achieve our goal of the best Pro & Club Champion pairing we were the highest scoring pair in the event. Thanks Simon I really enjoyed it.
Back at Moortown David Aitken having played a fantastic round in The Braime Trophy, disqualified himself on Sunday morning for signing for a wrong score. Proof golf is such an honourable game. It did make me wonder in a game which we are required to be self-regulatory, why do we have to get another person to mark our card? Just a thought. Anyway congratulations to Andrew Blackburn who took first place with a nett 71 from Matthew East, Cal Counsell-Jackson, Stuart Santon and Stephen Dean who all scored 72.
Well the Ryder Cup sides have been announced; personally I was very pleased for Stephen Gallacher was one of McGinley's picks. The performance in Italy last week was proof enough that he can perform under the greatest of pressure. I think Lee Westwood has produced form when it was asked of him, and well Poulter was a given from September 2012. I am very privileged in my position on The Board of The PGA to be attending the full week at Gleneagles, I will find out at the beginning of the Ryder Cup week if I am to be an official observer of one of the games, which I'm sure will be an experience never to forget. Just 3 weeks to go.
Don't forget that it is The Yorkshire Challenge at Moortown this next week so the course will be booked Wednesday, Thursday and Friday till 3.30pm.
