Welcome to another edition of our newsletter. In this week’s mail we have a special Video of the Week with none other than Rory McIlroy, we take a closer look at who will be trying to play their way into Bjorn's Ryder Cup team, and we offer a little advice on how to improve your game.

Competition news

August Stableford

It was a log jam on 39 points at the top of both divisions in the August Stableford at the weekend.

Division 1 was won on a count back by Jonny Rhodes from David Boyd and David Gracie. Division 2 was won also on a count back by Judy Owens from Jamie Chappell and Joseph Ellis having all scored 39 points.

Congratulations to Judy and Jamie who have both been on great form and both got exceptional score reduction, also mention to Joseph who was on the putting green on Friday and I congratulated him on getting cut from 20 to 13 this summer and told him he needed to get cut to 12 handicap before he was 14 as I had done that as 13 year old.

He duly obliged the next day! Next goal is to get lower than dad David, unfortunately for Joseph David is 2 shots lower than my dad ever got to! But I’m sure it won’t be long.

Setpember Medal

It is a busy weekend ahead with the September Medal on Saturday and The Jubilee Trophy on Sunday. The draw for the 11.30am Jubilee Shotgun is as follows:

Hudson Trophy

I am away this weekend doing battle in the Hudson trophy along with my partner Simon Stephens and David Houlding and Marcus Shepherd. 36 hole scratch foursomes will certainly test Simon’s nerve!

We haven’t won the Hudson Trophy since I have been the pro, so it would be nice to break that duck and add it to the Mackenzie victory earlier this month.

Ladies news

Moortown ladies at Pasatiempo

This year’s Ladies’ MacKenzie Gathering at Alister MacKenzie’s famous Pasatiempo Golf Course at Santa Cruz, California finished on a high note, and although this annual event is based on bringing people together in friendship there are also prizes to be won.

This year’s Moortown team, made up of Susan Preston, Kathleen Lennon, Adele Allen and Jane Slinger had three days of fun golf, and also managed to scoop a few prizes along the way.

Iain Esplin was the lucky winner of the special edition Titleist tour bag having bought a dozen Titleist balls earlier in the month – he seems very happy with his prize!

Just 4 weeks to go

The Ryder Cup is edging ever closer, with a lot of speculation over who will be chosen as one of the four wildcards on both sides of the Atlantic.

There is an expectation that USA Team Captain Jim Furyk will give one of those spots to a resurgent Tiger Woods, who can now be picked on form rather than reputation after experiencing a stellar comeback season. Others vying for a trip to Le Golf National in Paris are Zach Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Matt Kuchar, Kevin Kisner and Tony Finau, providing Furyk with an embarrassment of riches to choose from.

Thomas Bjorn won’t know exactly who has qualified for his European team until September 2, but the big names – Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm – are dead certs. The bigger question lies in the wildcard picks. Ian Poulter has a fearsome Ryder Cup record, having never lost a singles match, and has played himself into good form this season. Paul Casey, Thomas Pieters, Russell Knox and Rafa Cabrera-Bello are all in contention too, not to mention Ryder Cup veterans Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia.

Setting your sights

How many times do you find yourself lining up your shot and thinking "this is about an 8-iron from here to the pin", only to find that you end up 10-15 yards short of the hole? Being able to utilise accurate yardages is a key step to taking your game to the next level, which is why we'd recommend using a GPS device to ensure you always know exactly how far you have left to the pin.
