1929 Ryder Cup re-enactment
Over 100 players and guests were held enthralled throughout dinner on Friday evening, as the scores for Moortown’s 1929 Ryder Cup Charity re-enactment came in. Team Great Britain, headed by George Duncan (AKA Captain Malcolm Slinger) and Team USA, captained by Walter Hagen (AKA Vice Captain Ian Hartley) experienced a tense hour as Team GB’s earlier lead of 8 ½ to 3 ½ was whittled down, with the score standing at 5 ½ - 5 ½ with one match to play and team GB 1 up at the 15th hole. USA won the last three holes to win the Ryder Cup 6 ½ - 5 ½ ! A jubilant squad of Americans celebrated as the shout of ‘USA, USA’ rang around the room. Fingers crossed that this doesn’t happen at the weekend… |
