Welcome to another edition of our newsletter. This week we look ahead to the finale of the European Tour, cast our eye over the best wedge for distance control, and also show you some of the best golfing holidays on offer this winter. Enjoy the read. |
Weekend Medal We had the last medal of the year last Saturday which draws a close to the golfing season. David Houlding produced the best round of the day, with a gross 68, nett 69 to beat Andrew Garnett and Adam Dewhirst in the First Division on countback. It was a good weekend for David claiming his first Club Championship too beating Tom 4&3. The Captain produced the round I have been predicting and was dreading all year and won Division Two with a nett 68 and reduced his handicap by two shots to 13. Thankfully he didn’t do that at the beginning of the season as those two extra shots have been very helpful all year in all the matches. John Dart finished runner-up in Division Two and returned to Division One with a nett 69. Martin Gaffney was the big mover in the aggregate, birdieing the last hole to tie with Russell Gunning and Karandeep Sohel at 13 under for the year. It is the first time in my 16 years that the aggregate has been tied; you have to go back to 1997 for the last tie when Jonathan Flint and Bill Holmes tied. |
Calvert Rose Bowl On Sunday the Calvert Rose Bowl Plate drew a good field of over 40 players with over 60 attending the lunch. It was lovely to see both Roger and Margaret Calvert at the meal, not bad with a combined age of 189. I had a lovely chat with Roger and showed him a picture of when he was Captain at Pannal in 1974 – Roger straight off “Good year 1974 Gary Player won The Open at Royal Lytham” I told him it was the first Open I remembered properly as I was 9 years old! John and Sam Waters won the Plate with 35 points beating four other couples on 33 points. |
MacKenzie Fourball Knockout The last of the finals was also played on Sunday with Martin and Jack Schneider triumphing in the MacKenzie Fourball Knockout over Liam Magill and Jeff Barnett. |
President’s Cup Winter Four Ball There are quite a few three balls in Saturday’s President’s Cup Winter Four Ball, so if you fancy a game contact the shop. |
Moliwood go to battle for top spot... The European Tour will be hoping to match the excitement of the PGA Tour’s finale, with the Race to Dubai close to reaching its season-ending climax. Fresh from their exploits in the Ryder Cup, the ‘Moliwood’ pairing of Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood are busy occupying the top two spots, with Molinari holding a 1.4 million point lead over Fleetwood, who triumphed in the Race to Dubai last year. Also in contention are Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy, with the former looking to prove that his Ryder Cup display is well and truly forgotten. Reed will be more at home in the arid conditions than he was at Le Golf National, so he could be one to keep an eye on. It should be a great ending to what has been a memorable season. |
A bone of contention for golfers... Double hitting is a bone of contention for golfers, as it can be difficult to tell when a playing partner has hit the ball twice. The current rule for double hitting (14-4) states that if a player strikes the ball more than once during a stroke, the player must count the stroke and add a penalty stroke for two strokes altogether. However, with the new rules of golf coming into play on 1st January 2019, Rule 10.1a will state that if the player’s club accidentally hits the ball more than once during a single stroke, there will be no penalty. This is down to the fact that as the double hit was not the intention of the player, it was deemed unfair for the player to be penalised. |
