Welcome to another edition of our weekly newsletter, in which we keep you up to date on everything you need to know going on here at Moortown Golf Club. We hope you've had a great week on and off the course and enjoy the read! |
Captain's Day What a beautiful day for Captain’s Day last Saturday? 164 golfers finally took part and it was Peter Lambert who came out on top with 40 points, pipping Clive Bowyer by one point. Tim Barley won the best gross with a one-under-par 70 for 37 points. Matthew Parlett won the Junior Prize with 39 points and Peter Mooney edged Alan Landale for The Gibraltar Salver for nearest the pin on the 10th. 31 people managed to “beat the pro” at the 10th and it was Richard Cooper who was the lucky winner in the raffle. All followed by a great evening of Tamla Moortown – Well done Captain Ian, all in all a great day. It’s the Lady Captain’s turn on Sunday with Karen having an Australian theme – personally, I had enough of Australia in the cricket this week! With 45 ladies down to play and another nice forecast, I’m sure it will be a great day. |
Team news The scratch team and juniors both had good results this week. The scratch team beat Howley Hall 6-0 to move into a tie for third place with Howley Hall, just two points behind Wakefield and Waterton park, so all very close at the top. The juniors moved to the top of the league with a 4-2 win at Darrington. The boys are undefeated this year and play second place Sand Moor at home next Tuesday in what could be a championship decider. The social match at Lindrick resulted in a resounding 5-1 win for Moortown, this following on from a great 3-3 draw away at Formby.

Congratulations... I would also like to mention Josh Stephens who won the Yorkshire U15 Order of Merit at Moortown on Sunday with 35 points off the white tees – well done Josh. |

Upcoming events It's the Scratch Cup and Blue tee Medal this Saturday – a red hot forecast with David Houlding going for his seventh Scratch Cup title trying to close in on Alan Turner’s record of nine. Don’t forget the sunscreen it’s forecast to be nearly 30 degrees. |
Open Qualifying With only three weeks to The Open, it was Regional Qualifying last Monday. Unfortunately David Houlding missed out at Alwoodley shooting 73, two shots off qualifying. Three bogeys in the first six holes put David behind the eight ball, and then nothing would drop with David parring the last 12 holes for 73. It was a different story for Ben Firth at Fairhaven, after also starting poorly and being one over after six holes Ben caught fire on the last twelve holes with six birdies to lead the qualifying with a five-under-par 67. On Tuesday, 2 July, Ben will try to make his way through to Royal Portrush at Hollinwell, and Nick McCarthy who was exempt from Regional Qualifying will try to emulate his performance from two years ago trying to qualify at St. Annes Old Links. With only three spots at each of the four final qualifying venues it’s a big ask, but a dream in the making. Good luck to both of them. |

Is there a better time than summer to be out playing golf? Silly question, really. So, now you’ve got your cap on and you’re lathered in sun lotion, it’s time to make sure the most important part of your body (arguably) is protected: your eyes. |
