With the thermometer touching 20 degrees it certainly didn't feel like winter. A little change is in the air, but the course is looking by far and away better than it ever has going into winter in my 12 years at Moortown.
The first Winter Order of Merit on Saturday was a close run thing, with Tom Flannery, Rod Robertson, Rod Fisher and Richard Jackson scoring 89 points to beat Chris Craven Jack Cooke Mike Craven and Antony Burrows by one point. It was good to see two of our 7 day ladies playing; hopefully a few more might join them this winter.
The Tamala Moortown night packed the clubhouse on Saturday night, there was a disco, illusionists who not only made their assistant disappear to who knows where, but also managed to make past Captain Antony Burrows and yours truly look not only uncomfortable but rather stupid! Then there was Micky Jay with a Michael Jackson tribute act. I'm not sure that Moortown has seen quite so much pelvic thrusting ever!! From the one who is on a dry November, a lot of members seemed to be enjoying themselves.
To round off the weekend, Lady Captain Glenys organised a Mixed Social Golf Event with lunch and despite a few hangovers, nine teams of three took part on the day - a record number this season. The 27 players went into a draw on the day and each team was made up of one man and two ladies. The Florida Scramble format was declared a great success and in a closely fought competition the winning team was Mr Captain, Fiona Stoddard and Marian Cooke who each received a bottle of Champagne. Seasonal prizes were also awarded to the teams in second and third. A Carvery lunch rounded off the event and there was a great atmosphere in the Club House which for some lasted well into the afternoon!
The ladies are on the rampage in the North Leeds Ladies Golf Alliance following on from Patsy and Susan Mannion winning, Denise Watson and Christine Mannion finishing second and Judy Owens and Lady Vice Sue Rogerson finishing 6th at Scarcroft in the first event of the season in October. On Tuesday at Moor Allerton, Karen Duffield and Liz Milner claimed 2nd spot with Lady Captain Glenys Smart and her foursomes partner Liz Boldy coming in 6th. Moortown Ladies have consolidated their lead at the top of this seasons NLLGA league. Over seventy teams from ten clubs in North Leeds compete in foursomes competitions at different venues over the winter months and points are awarded for the top six teams at each venue. The third match in the four match series will be held at Headingley in February with our ladies well ahead and hoping to retain the trophy they won last season. Congratulations go to all the ladies especially Christine Mannion NLLGA organiser, for some Paul McGinley like selections!
