The Autumn Medal

The switch to yellow tees for the Autumn Medal certainly suited Martin Gaffney who produced one of the best rounds of not just season but probably the last decade with a 66 gross.

After a birdie on the first Martin proceeded to bogey two and three, then the start of an amazing run of 15 holes that contained ten 3’s. Quite remarkable was that Martin had four 5’s, so played 14 holes in 46 shots!

Those of you who remember The Sunday Express “Keep a Six off your card” that would certainly have won ½ a dozen balls! What was especially nice for Martin was he achieved scratch handicap for the first time in his life.

It was not only Martin who produced their best round for a few years, Chris Craven won Division Two by six shots shooting a nett 67 and that included an 8 on the 12th hole. Chris has been working hard with me over the past few years, and armed with some new wedges said: “The lessons and the wedges have finally paid off”. Chris achieved his lowest handicap for over four years; proof that we all should keep trying to improve. Well played Chris, I’m delighted for you.

Other mentions to Pete Owens with showing a return to form with a nett 68, Jeff Barnett with another good score of 69, Martyn Robinson, Scott Harrison, Russell Gunning and Rob Allison all scoring 70.

Course Work

The work on the 4th hole has continued at a pace this week with the pipework going in, it really is a huge job being skilfully done in house to preserve as much of the surroundings in a very difficult area. I can’t wait to see the finished article.

Rahmbo runs riot...

To some back in his homeland, Jon Rahm is already the King of Spain and he cemented his status as Spain’s number one golfer with a five-shot victory in a home-grown top three lockout at the Open de Espana.

In the end, it proved quite comfortable for Rahm who converted his five-shot overnight lead into victory ahead of Cabrera-Bello (-17) and Del Val (-15).

Perhaps more importantly for Rahm, the win - his third of 2019 - puts him in pole position in the lucrative Race to Dubai standings, leapfrogging Open Champion Shane Lowry to top spot.

The victory also sees Rahm jump to fourth in the World Rankings, with three Europeans currently occupying three of the top five positions (Rory McIlroy second & Justin Rose fifth).
