On the first competition of Christmas...

After the horrendous weather last Thursday that caused the devastation down in South Yorkshire, remarkably the course was open again on Friday morning, and 45 couples competed in the first Christmas Competition on Saturday.

It was aggregate winner Chris Pennington continuing his great season along with Pete Owens who led the way with 38 points, with 7 gross birdies between them over 15 holes. Jamie Chappell and Jonny Rhodes pushed them all the way with 37 points for second place.

The top eight from Saturday qualified for the President’s Cup winter 4 ball knockout and the draw can be found here.

An Apology

I must apologise to the previous week’s winners, Ben Winterbottom and Shaun Gorman for not mentioning them in the newsletter. Last out and finishing in the dark Shaun hit his second in to the last hole not knowing where it had gone, to find it a few feet away and a resulting birdie pipped David Aitken and Jonathan Sands who had scored 40 points by one point.

Ladies and Men's Vice Captains nominated

Charlie Parker has been nominated to be Vice-Captain for 2020 joining a small number of members to have followed their father in the position of Captain at Moortown, with Charlie’s father Albert Geoffrey Parker having been Captain in 1990. Anne Weston has been nominated to be Lady Vice –Captain for 2020 alongside Charlie. I wish them both all the best and sure they will both have many memorable times over the coming years.

To help mark the end of the year, it is both the ladies' and men's Annual Dinners this week, with prize presentations, congratulations to everybody who has won a prize, for everybody else, better luck next year.

You don’t get to a single-figure handicap without having a strong iron game, but the journey shouldn't end there. For us, there are two key factors that, when combined properly, will help take your iron play to the next level.

1) Get custom-fitted

If you're serious about shooting in the 70s each and every round, then getting custom-fitted for your next set of irons is key.

Asking for forgiveness

Improving your iron play is key if you want to lower your handicap this winter, but you need to give yourself the best chance of doing so at the same time. That's why these stats made us sit up and pay attention...

We should all be looking to make this game as easy as possible for ourselves, and that’s why we recommend joining the 55% of golfers who don't use a 3 or 4-iron by swapping yours out for a more forgiving and easy-to-use hybrid.

The cold facts

Colder temperatures have a consequence on every aspect of our game, from the clothes we wear to how far the ball travels through the air. We all certainly dress to combat the chill on a winter’s day, but how many of you are switching your golf ball for one that offers you more distance when you need it the most?

The science:

Cold air is denser than warm air, which creates additional drag on the ball resulting in it going a shorter distance. Also, chillier temperatures mean colder clubs, which in turn means the transfer of energy from the clubface to the ball is not as efficient as when it is warm. Lesson over!

The solution:

A soft distance ball is key to cutting through the dense air to maintain that vital winter distance. One that we stock in the pro shop is Mizuno’s JPX ball, which sees a soft compression core combine with a micro dimple design to keep the ball travelling through the air for longer.
