How far is too far? Well, golf hit the national news this week, with shock horror, Golf is being ruined by how far the elite golfers are hitting the ball. In 1995, says this golf distance survey, the average driving distance on the PGA Tour was 263 yards. In 2019, the average driving distance on the PGA and European Tours combined was 294 yards. The problem is the average handicap of the club golfer hasn’t improved in the same period.
Many say that the only way to preserve the game will involve bifurcation, in other words, different rules applying for one golfer to another. Specifically, tour pros, and possibly skilled amateurs too, being forced to use clubs that are less powerful and/or balls that do not fly as far. I have a bit of a major problem with this, the beauty of golf over most other sports is that you can play with the same equipment over the same courses as the top professionals. Try getting a tennis game at Wimbledon or a kick about at Wembley.
The answer maybe very simple, limit the length of the longest club, and make the golf ball bigger. These two things would benefit the less proficient player as they would be in more control and the larger ball will enable them to get the ball in the air more easily as the centre of gravity will be higher. Callaway already offers a bigger ball aimed at the higher handicapper in the Supersoft Magna. Take a look to understand why it might be good for you here.
