It was a weekend full of winners from my winter coaching series. Firstly on Saturday Mike Craven partnered Nigel Binks to win the 3rd Christmas Competition scoring 42 points beating 5 couples all tied on 40 points. Then on Sunday it was the turn of David McCartney who paired up with Martin Allison to win the Captain Pro Grand Finale. I know you all groan when you hear of yet another coaching success story, but there is a common theme!
This week we'll take a look at Mike who still generates a really good clubhead speed, but due to various sporting injuries was swinging the club across the ball by 10 to 11 degrees. The main change for Mike has been to work on his set up position - for anyone who is slicing the ball badly it is very difficult to believe that aiming more right is the answer, but certainly in Mike's case it is. The setup position more behind the and aiming with the feet more to the right has enabled Mike to achieve a much more powerful position at the top of the backswing, with much more stable leg action - result longer straighter drives, and bottles of wine from the Christmas Competition!

Traditionally the ladies wear some kind of seasonal accessory and this year the Captains set the tone with reindeer antlers and bells. Clearly this extra headgear didn't hamper Sue, Lady Vice-Captain who won the event with a score of 20 Stableford points over the 9 holes with Vicky Renny runner up. The ladies rounded off the day with a superb Christmas lunch courtesy of Stuart and Cath. The same 9 hole competition will run again for weekday players on Tuesday 16th December - there are already 40 ladies signed up for lunch and seasonal accessories will be the order of the day once more!
The Captain and I made the annual pilgrimage to Scarcroft for the LDUGC Christmas charity completion on Wednesday, along with the Vice-Captain and Vice-Captain elect. The Captain and I paired up with two past Cookridge Hall Captains to take 3rd place - just one point off winning!
You may have noticed that we haven't sent a shop Christmas Card out for the first time this year, It's not because we aren't thinking about you all this Christmas but instead, I have decided to donate £200 to The Captain's Charity Martin House, in recognition for the incredible feat by Martyn to not only breeze past 200 rounds of golf but to also play with 200 members during his year of Captaincy. An absolutely fantastic effort and if you haven't donated you still can at https://www.justgiving.com/MoortownGC/ it would be fantastic to see Martyn break the £5,000 mark before Christmas.
There is still time to grab those Christmas presents, I have managed to get hold of the last few limited edition Ryder Cup Bushnell V3 range finders and as a Christmas extra we are giving away a limited edition set of Bushnell binoculars all for only £269. The new Skycaddie Aire 2 is also proving a good stocking filler at only £129. Knowing how far you have got to go does change the game, once you've had a distance measuring device you really find it hard to play without one.
