Stephens wins Scratch Cup
Another full-on week with Invitation day, Scratch Cup, Blue Tee and Intermediate, Ladies Challenge Bowl and everyone else wanting to play golf as well. Invitation day was won by Nicholas Spencer and his guest Simon O’Hara with 44 points beating Jeff Barnett and Lee Pargeter by one point having scored 43 points. Third place went to Robin Hill and John Diskin with 42 points beating Isaac Smith and dad Phil on countback. A special mention to Peter Wilson who had his first-ever hole-in-one, holing out on the 17th. Sunday saw another Stephens at the top of the leaderboard, but this time it wasn’t Josh and Thomas but dad Simon. Simon gave himself an early birthday present by taking The Scratch Cup for the first time since 1998, beating Alan Turner’s record of 20 years between first and last win. No doubt Simon will be keen not to make it his last win and after rounds of 72 and 75 and a three-shot victory he has every right to think there will be more to come. Lee Sharpe produced two solid rounds of 75 for second place. It was good to see juniors qualifying for the Club Championship – the full draw can be seen on the Club V1 App. There was another hole-in-one on Sunday with Billy Snowden being the first person to hole-in-one the new fourth hole from the blue tee. Anne Weston produced a solid 3 over par back nine to seal the Ladies Challenge Bowl with scores of 72 & 77. Lastly a mention to Adam Gunn, Thomas Barnes Grimes and Billy Snowden who represented the club in YUGC Team Championships at Abbeydale on Wednesday with all of them breaking 80 in both rounds. Well done boys.
