Competition news

New clubs just the ticket for R&A Glory

Having gone out second and posted a 61 in The R & A Trophy, Tim Broadhead and David Nugent must have gone home for their breakfast confident that they had got the job done, repeating their success of 2010. The best score since I have been at Moortown was a 61 by Martyn Duffield and Roger Limbert in 2018, but all that was going to change, Simon Williams and son Harry blew the field away with a 58 nett.

Now I’m going to milk this story as we haven’t had a good fitting story for a while! Last week Harry Williams came for a driver fitting, having been using his Mum’s 13.5 degree ladies driver a switch to a 10.5 Titleist stiff driver found in excess of 50 yards! Simon also wanted to try some new fairway woods, a switch to regular shafted Callaway Mavrik Max 3 and 5 woods saw a dramatic increase in peak height, Simon asked if he could take them out on Saturday in the R & A Trophy. As they say the rest is history, they both came in nine times on the card so an all round family effort.

Don’t forget on Tuesday 18th August I have GolfClubs4Cash coming to Moortown. Between 10am and 3pm bring along your old clubs and bags and they will give you a valuation there and then for them and we will credit your account in the pro shop.

It’s the ideal way to turn all that old clutter into a new pair of shoes, a new driver, basically anything you like in the shop. Quite a few people have said they can’t make day, if you can’t manage to get up on the day just gather up anything you want to trade in and band them together with your name on and drop them off in the shop, I will get them to give you a price on the day and credit your account.

The wait was worth it

The long wait for a Major was worth it. What an incredible PGA Championship we saw at TPC Harding Park!

A highly-competitive tournament saw everybody from rising stars to relative unknowns and, of course, Brooks Koepka all have a pop at the Wanamaker Trophy. In the end, it was rising star Collin Morikawa who came out on top.

Usually, pars are enough when you hold the lead on Sunday at a Major, but not this time. A six-under 64, including a chip-in birdie on 14 and an eagle on the 16th, took Morikawa to -13 for the week to claim an incredible victory aged 23 and in just his second Major start.

We had a poll on our website last week that asked who was most likely to dominate golf over the next decade. Jon Rahm was by far the favourite - he's back to World Number One now - followed by Koepka and then Justin Thomas. The egg is certainly on our face for not including Morikawa in our list! Maybe next time…

Think you're not good enough to be fitted?

The number of golfers who have not been fitted for their irons is far higher than it should be. We often hear golfers say they’re not good enough to get custom fitted, but we are here to dispel that myth and explain why getting fitted WILL improve your iron play.

Consistency is critical in your iron play and being fitted for your irons will give you this, plus improve your accuracy and make any errors less extreme.

There are so many factors that influence our ability to strike the ball better and hit the ball where we want it to go. One thing you may not have tried before is Titleist's T-Series iron range, which features two limited black finishes in T100-S and T200. These look incredible!
