Porter gets the X Factor
Does the ball you play really make a difference? Manufacturers make claims of greater speed, more spin, less spin, goes further, stops more – what can you believe? The answer is you can only believe the physics. So last Friday the Titleist ball fitting specialist came to Moortown armed with his Trackman. Eight people were tested through the bag, with peak height, spin and decent angle all be considered along with feel. Of the eight players, seven were recommended a different ball than they were currently playing, with the majority being switched from Pro V1 to Pro V1x. The Pro V1x is designed to fly higher and reach its apex farther down the flight, it generates longer carry distance compared to the Pro V1. The original Pro V1x produced less spin than the Pro V1 but that changed in 2017 when the roles were reversed and the Pro V1x started generating more spin than the Pro V1, that is the bit that many people hadn’t realised. Then add in the AVX and now the ProV1x left dash, it really does become confusing. The left dash model is a niche product, Pro V1x Left Dash golf balls are designed for players seeking a high flight similar to Pro V1x with dramatically lower full swing spin and firmer feel. Dave Porter came along to the ball fitting on Friday and was recommended the Pro V1x left dash and given two to trial. So armed with his new prototype Dave teed it up in the Autumn Medal on Saturday. On a difficult day with windy conditions Dave obviously benefitted from the better flight as he produced a best of the day nett 69 to win Division One by 2 shots. |
