Strong winds on Saturday for the first handicap qualifier of the year saw the CSS go up by two shots - from the yellow tees a very rare occurrence. That didn't stop some good scoring, Alan Easton won division one with 36 points. Alan took advantage of my clearance sale a few weeks ago and had a mini fitting and purchased a new Razr Extreme driver, X Hot fairway and hybrid, he told me on Wednesday when I played with the Midwood he was very happy with them - I'm not surprised. Howard Greenwood took division two with the best score of the day of 39 points, piping Mike Winterbottom who continued his good form with 38 points.
I was at Wentworth on Monday filming the Sky Sports advert clip for Callaway. I think first airing of the clips are starting on 27th March. Fortunately they don't follow the ball too far so hopefully they will look OK! Callaway had Joe Miller who won the 2010 World Long Drive Championship down doing a show in the afternoon and was testing some equipment in the morning. I was lucky enough to close up for the equipment testing, and his favoured driver was a 3.9 degree X2Hot, yes that's right 3.9 degrees and he hopes in the next run of manufacture from the USA they will be able to produce one as low as 2.5 degrees! It rather questions TaylorMade's advertising campaign trying to get us all to loft up to hit the ball further, as Joe was carrying the ball 350 yards plus! Below and to the right are a few pictures of the driver, how high Joe tees the ball and a pretty powerful looking setup.
The shop is finally taking shape and is really full to bursting and I really believe is looking as good as ever. The hottest product this week has been without doubt the new Callaway SuperSoft ball. The ball is aimed at all golfers with a swing speed under 80 mph, but claims from some faster swing speed players is it is incredible. Those of you that remember when golf balls had a compression on them will remember it being either 90 or 100 compression (red or black numbers), well this is 38 compression. What this means is that a slower swing speed player can properly compress the ball and get full efficiency from the ball.
David Auerbach was in the studio having a lesson and had previously pinched my one sample SuperSoft as he loved it so much! David was consistently carrying his 9 iron 96-97 yards trying to reach the magical 100 yards, we switched to the SuperSoft and first shot carried 105 yards, the next 4 shots all carried over 100 yards. The most amazing thing is they are £5 a sleeve of 3, £18 a dozen or only £32 for2 dozen, like all balls they are not for everybody but if you don't carry you drives 200 yards I would seriously recommend trying them.
The Masters Sweepstake is up and running in the shop, make sure if you haven't entered yet to enter this weekend as all the players should go this week.
Enjoy the rest of the newsletter, have a great week.
