So that's it, the last Winter Order of Merit was played on Saturday. Stuart Santon and Richard Sharp were the competition organisers' worst nightmare being last out and producing the best score of the day! The two hole format will need some modifying as I think the extra point in the small hole meant that the big hole wasn't used too often. We worked out that 48 points was par golf and so the winning score of 54 by Stuart and Richard was excellent in the conditions. Eddie Winn and Paul Shires were second with 52 and James Burnett and Dave Robinson third also with 52 points.
Dave Robinson won the division 1 Winter Order of Merit having been a model of consistency all winter. Dave had two seconds, one third and two fourth place finishes and I think is the first person to win the Winter Order of Merit without winning any of the competitions, but won £150 for his consistency. Mike Cooper and John Renny tied for second each winning £75. Mike Craven won division two and £150 having amassed an unassailable lead with two wins and a second place before Christmas, Mike West took second place and £100, with Bill Dales & Mike Winterbottom sharing third place and £25 each. Thanks to everyone for your support of the competitions, we lost a few to the weather this year but still had a record turnout.
It's the first official club competition of the year on Saturday, the 5 club challenge which also marks my 12th Anniversary at Moortown. So what clubs are you taking for the 5 Club? My choice would be 3 Wood, 5 Iron, 8 Iron, 52 degree gap Wedge and Putter. I remember 12 years ago it was my first day at Moortown and Paul Faulhaber won the 5 club with 39 points - he was at an advantage as he used his Driver from everywhere! As an extra bonus to celebrate 12 years at Moortown, anybody who scores a gross birdie on the 12th hole on Saturday will get 3 Titleist Pro V1s and every nett birdie will receive 1 Titleist Pro V1.
I have been having some amazing results with the new Callaway XR woods and irons in the studio. My brother came over on Monday and couldn't quite believe the 20 yard gain over his Callaway XF irons which were previously 15 yards longer than his old irons. David McCartney's expressions I'm afraid I can't publish, but he did order a set! Martin Cooper came in and after hitting the XR driver didn't want to try anything else because "I want that one!" I know you all go on about me and my newsletter, but seriously these clubs are built for speed, quite how they have done it I don't know but my brother saw a 10% increase in ball speed. Look forward to seeing you at the weekend and hopefully dishing out a few balls for birdies on the 12th.
