It was a one, two and three for Eddie's pupils in the Greenwood Shield qualifier. Paul Turner produced another fantastic score to finish top qualifier with a nett 68, Simon Stephens shot a gross 70 for a net 69 to beat Stephen Kirk on a countback. Paul has had a flying start to the year and like Elliott Kay has been subjected to an Exceptional Score Reduction (ESR) after two rounds 5 under or better.
I played two rounds this week after my first outing of the year against Huddersfield. On Monday, I went with the Captain in a reconnaissance mission to Brancepeth Castle prior to the Captain's Away Day at the end of May. Having never played the course before I wasn't sure what to expect - but I was mightily impressed. The par 3 holes all play across ravines and are spectacular; the rest of the course is on the flat land that formed part of the old deer park of Brancepeth Castle. The course is not long and there was not much rough, and the key to scoring will definitely be the par 3's. The Captain has got a great day planned, with a five course dinner, and a top comedian lined up. I notice there are a couple of drop outs so if you fancy a great day out on the 29th May give me a call and I'll put your name down.
My second round was the first of the 2015 Captain Pro Challenges. On a very blustery Wednesday afternoon the Captain and I managed to beat Clive Bowyer and Martin Cooper on the last hole. The Captain went up enormously in my estimation by refusing to start the second bottle of wine at the half way house! Clive and Martin put on a great spread at halfway and have certainly set the bar very high in the entertainment stakes!
The Moortown Ladies' B Team had a great start to the Yorkshire Inter Club Matches by beating Whitby away 5-2 on Friday 24 April. They had a glorious day for the match, as opposed last year, where they were battered by gale force winds and torrential rain. They avenged their loss of last year, in spite of giving plenty of shots. Sue Preston had a fine debut persevering to the last putt and winning her match on the 18th. Their next match is away at Sandmoor.
Saturday sees the start of the new white and yellow tee option medals. As a trial for 2015, competitors in all medals and Stableford will be able to choose if they play from the white tees or yellow tees. They will be run as two separate competitions but in one division. It is hoped that it will satisfy more members and of course your feedback is always appreciated.
A few congratulations to members for external competition victories - Tom Gray and Marcus Shepherd won their first round of the Leeds and District scratch foursomes, and Stephen East continued his dominance of all things senior amateur wise in the world by capturing the Portuguese Seniors scoring 211 for 3 rounds to win by five shots.
