President's Weekend was a huge success last weekend. Jamie Chappell returned an unbelievable score of 48 points to take first place from Dave Sayers who scored 45 points. Stuart Santon set the YOGI course record with a fine score of 69. The ladies competition was won by Judy Owens in the silver division with 37 points and Tracie Trewin with 40 points in the bronze division.
Captain's Away Day
Captain's Away Day to Brancepeth Castle on Friday was also a huge success. Unfortunately there were quite a few cry offs but the 35 who made the journey managed to dodge most of the horrendous forecast and enjoyed an unparalleled service from the staff at Brancepeth. When it started to rain while we were having bacon rolls they went out and put plastic bags over everybody's clubs! They all seemed so pleased that Moortown had chosen to go there for their away day. The winning team on the day were the heavily backed team of Jamie Allison, Mike West, Ian Chippendale and The Vice-Captain who scored 82 points.
Scratch Team
The scratch team of Andy Jones, Marcus Shepherd and Ben Firth secured a memorable win in cold and windy conditions against Cookridge Hall in the LDUGC knockout last Thursday. Andy played his usual great game to secure his win by 5&4. Marcus was up against the Cookridge number 1 player off a +2 handicap and just back from a year playing college golf in the USA - Marcus played very well despite losing by 3&2.
With the game in the balance at 1-1 attention now turned to the final game on the course where Ben Firth was fighting his way back from 4 down at the turn. When Ben lost the 16th to go dormie 2 down it didn't look good for Moortown, but he never gave up and won the 17th and 18th to take his match into extra holes. With no sign of nerves Ben made a great birdie at the 19th to win his match and take Moortown into the quarter finals.
On Monday in the league in absolutely horrendous conditions the team secured a 3 - 3 draw away at Mid Yorkshire to remain unbeaten in the scratch league and in 2nd place in the table. Once again Andy Jones was a comfortable winner by 5&3, Tom Gray got a half and Marcus Shepherd lost 3&2 to his opponent who despite the weather made 3 or 4 birdies and holed a wedge from 60 yards for an eagle at the 10th.
The ladies scratch team not be out done enjoyed a 7-0 whitewash of Moor Allerton. Well done ladies.
