It was possibly one of the toughest medal days in my time at Moortown last Saturday. CSS rose to 77 off the white tees and it was reduction only from the yellow tees. Robert Westmoreland topped a quartet of player who scored 73 to win the white tee medal from Stephen Kirk, Keith Williams and Richard Sharp. Stephen and Richard have been in sparkling form this year and those 4 under scores of 73 saw them both subject to a one shot Exceptional Score Reduction. Mike Craven won the yellow tee medal with a nett 74. It was great to see winter coaching pupils Keith and Mike for me and Stephen for Eddie in the winner's circle again.
The scratch team suffered its first defeat of the year - After playing in high winds, rain and hail storms in previous weeks the relatively benign conditions on Monday night caught them by surprise and contributed to a disappointing 5-1 loss at home to Wakefield.
Andy Jones and Matthew East lost their matches against tough opposition and Ben Firth managed a half after his opponent chipped in from off the green on the 17th to stay in the game.
On Sunday it was a tight finish to the Bradford social match all coming down to the last match - and cometh the hour cometh the man, Mike West holed from off the green to win his match with Elliott Kay to tie the match - much to the joy of all the Moortown team soaking up the sunshine around the 18th.
Ben Firth won the Seaton Salver at Seaton Carew last Saturday with probably the highest score that has ever won a scratch event - in horrendous wind Ben scored 81 & 83 for 164 to win by 3 shots. Congratulations to Ben for keeping going when there were 32 no returns and only 28 players staying the course and finishing with only two scores under 80 all day.
Dennis Birch and Bill Mutch played in a Yorkshire Union Seniors County meeting at Shipley Golf Club last Thursday and won it with 43 points. As well as individual trophies they were awarded the Elysian trophy. Well done guys, glad the lessons are paying off Bill.
