Gerry Connolly surprised himself more than anybody by becoming he first player in Moortown's history to win Captain's Day twice on Saturday. Gerry, who admitted to nearly quitting golf due to not being able to see the ball after various eye operations, stormed the back nine scoring 24 points to pip Paul Brown and John Fearn. David Houlding won the gross prize cruising round in 68. The evening BBQ was well supported but after 9½ hours on the 10th tee doing beat the pro, I was out of it by midnight. Congratulations to all the people who beat me at the 10th and to Mike Armstrong who won the raffle. I understand over £1,500 was raised for The Captain's Charity.
Nick McCarthy topped the Open Regional Qualifying at Moortown on Monday. Teeing off early, Nick missed the worst of the weather but a 69 held all day, guaranteeing Nick a place at Hillside next Tuesday in final qualifying. David Houlding just missed out on a play-off spot bogeying the 18th for a 73.
