It was father and son to the front, with Len and Matthew Fawke taking top honours in the second Christmas Competition, pipping David Robinson and Robert Allison on the back nine having both scored 40 points. Len's two on the 17th and Matthew's two net one on the 10th (should those really be allowed??!!) obviously sealing the deal on the back nine. As with all four of the Christmas competitions the winners will lose two shots from their handicap for the remaining Christmas Competitions but will revert to their normal handicap for the remaining Winter Order of Merit Competitions.
It was remarkable that the course was open on Saturday with the rain on Friday night. Since the 1st October we have now had 8 inches of rain at Moortown. The drill and fill of the greens and the verti-draining of the fairways have made an amazing difference. So much so that the green staff were out cutting the greens first thing this morning.
It's due to turn cold for the weekend with an icy blast coming down from the north - I can't say and about time too. The exceptionally mild November means we are stocked to the rafters with cold weather gear in the shop - everything from base layers to lined sweater to hand warmers to knitted hats. You name it we've got it, so for this weekend we have a special promotion on the Oscar Jacobson lined sweaters with 20% Off, so don't feel the cold this weekend, or grab someone a great Christmas present.
Teacher's Pet this week is Mike Sumpton. Mike has never taken lessons before and was getting frustrated that his striking with his longer irons was deteriorating and he was hitting more and more hybrids. Mike won't mind me saying he had one of the shortest swings I have ever seen, and has probably got shorter and shorter over the past few years. I said that if we could get to the stage that Mike's hands got to his shoulders by the end of March then I would feel we had really achieved something. Well three weeks in and some work with a theraband and some breathing exercises the results are astounding - striking has improved and so has distance. Well done Mike, look forward to seeing where we can get come April.
